Four Useful Questions to Ask Your Tattoo Artist Before Getting A Tattoo
For the majority of people, getting your first tattoo is a life changing decision. So you need to ensure you get the right person for the job. As once you get inked, theres no coming back from it. And you do not want to spend your life regretting your decision. So we have compiled together four of the most important questions you need to ask your tattoo artist before hiring them.
1) Ask to see their portfolio
The best way to see whether a Tattoo Artist is any good is by asking to see their portfolio of past work. The best way to ask your tattoo artist is to ask for their photo album of previous work. You will then be able to see for yourself whether the artist can deliver to the standard and quality you’re looking for. Make sure you look through their work very carefully to ensure the pictures are actual photographs. As some tattoo artist will cut pictures from magazines and books to make people think it’s their own work.
2) Ask About the Artist Qualifications
You may have an amazing custom-made design in mind for your new ink, however it’s the artist’s skill and experience that will ultimately determined the quality of your new body art. You may feel really uncomfortable asking an artist about their qualifications or previous work. However, realistically speaking if an artist is hesitant to answer the question, it could be a strong indicator that they are not confident in their own quality of work or experience. Any confident and experienced artist will be happy to answer your questions about their qualifications or previous work. As they take pride in any work they have completed. Never just go on a person’s sense of confidence, as anyone can fake being confident. Get to know your artist as much as possible before getting any work done!
3) Ask How They Sterilize Their Tattooing Equipment
Ensuring an Artist’s equipment is fully sterilized should be your primary concern. As if the equipment is not fully sterilized after use, it could cause serious problems for you. Again it may seem like an awkward question to ask, however it’s best to be safe then sorry. Ask the artist whether they take proper measurements to sterilize their equipment. Or ask to see their monthly spore testing report. These tests are mandatory to complete, and are set by the Health Department who issue artists licences.
4) Ask About Aftercare
The aftercare of your tattoo is incredibly important! As if you do not properly care for your ink, it can become infected and cause serious problems. Your artist should use proper first aid methods to clean, and bandage your tattoo and should provide you with some careful aftercare instructions. We have provided a useful step-by-step Aftercare Guide if you want to prepare in advanced. However please remember to still ask your tattoo artist about aftercare. As it will give you peace of mind and will ensure that the tattoo artist knows what they are talking about before having your tattoo.
